Tezpur University (TU) students on Monday raised their voices against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) as they gathered in the university premises for the XVII Convocation Day.
Around 1275 students under various disciplines received their degree certificates from Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi during the convocation ceremony held at the Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha Auditorium.
During the convocation, 82 doctoral degrees, 741 master degrees, 402 bachelor degrees, and 42 diplomas were given away.
Speaking to Northeast Now a student from the Mass Communication and Journalism department said, “We will never accept CAA, which is against the hopes and aspirations of the people of Northeast.”
“The government should understand as to why the students are protesting,” he added.
“Not just from Assam, but several students across the country are protesting against CAA. The government should know why this protest?” he added.
Lashing out at some of the recent comments made by state BJP president Ranjeet Dass, another student said, “He said some vegetable and egg vendors protested against CAA, which is an irresponsible comment.”
“I have completed my masters in Sociology and am I such an idiot to jump into a protest just like that? We have our strong reasons to oppose CAA,” she added.
Reportedly, the Gauhati University (GU) students on Monday sat for their exams sporting black badges that carried ‘I Oppose CAA’ written over it.
“I was injured during the protests in front of the Assam Secretariat on December 10. I am still in pain but I will neither skip my examination nor will stop opposing CAA,” said a GU student.
“We want to make it clear to the government that their methods to suppress our movement against CAA will not douse,” she added while talking to Northeast Now.
