West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday questioned about the number of people who died in Assam after the implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC).
While speaking to the media in West Bengal’s Nabanna on Thursday, Banerjee said that the Trinamool Congress’s victory in the State’s Assembly by-polls is a solid indication of the fact that the people of the State are against NRC.
The Trinamool Congress won all the three seats – Kaliaganj, Kharagpur-Sadar and Karimpur- in the Assembly by-polls, the results of which were declared on Thursday.
She also said that the Centre cannot bypass an elected state government to impose NRC.

Banerjee claimed that the BJP is threatening people in the name of NRC and have hampered their democratic rights.
She also claimed that 20 people have already committed suicide due to fear of NRC in West Bengal.
Banerjee also questioned about the fate of people living in Assam after the NRC had been implemented in the State.

The chief minister also claimed that the BJP’s actions had led them to suffer defeat in the country’s financial capital Maharashtra and also in West Bengal, the cultural capital of the country.
She also claimed that the BJP might also be defeated in Jharkhand.
