Manipur Assembly budget session

The full Budget Session of the Manipur Assembly began with State Governor Dr Najma Heptulla’s address at its Chingmeirong Assembly complex on Friday.

In her address, Governor Dr Heptulla has admitted that the State Government has made continuous efforts to remove the emotional and developmental gap between various communities of the State.

She also highlighted the ‘regular and structured interaction with the public’ under the banner ‘Meeyamgi Numit’ (people’s day) and ‘Hill Leaders Day’ in her address.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh had been meeting public leaders on two occasions namely ‘Hill Leaders Day’ on the 10th day of every month and Meeyamgi Numit (People’s day) on every 15th day since the BJP-led coalition government came to power in March 2017.

On the law and order front, the Governor said the government has kept the doors open for negotiation with insurgent groups with a view to bring them into the mainstream.

About 75 cadres of different insurgent groups surrendered this year. At the same time, the government has initiated measures to set up the state human rights commission which has been lying dormant for some time.

To fight against the increasing crime against women, a fast track court has been established besides setting up three new family courts in Imphal East, Thoubal and Bishnupur districts, she added.

On the food security, she also informed the House that the Government is currently giving monthly rations to 22,47,548 beneficiaries under Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) and priority households.

In the education sector, the government intends to develop model schools in five districts at a cost of Rs 20 crores each in the coming years, the Governor added.

In power sector, she said 2,457 villages out of 2,582 census villages have been electrified so far. The remaining 25 will be converted by the end of 2019.

Later the House was adjourned till Monday as there will be no sitting on Saturday and Sunday.

The budget session is scheduled to conclude on February 23.
