A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Arunachal Pradesh Police on Sunday arrested senior self-styled commander of the ULFA-I, Ranjan Bikash Borgohain alias Bikash alias Ramen Barua.

The SIT, led by superintendent of police (SP), SIT, Dr. Navdeep Singh Brar, comprised police inspectors N. Lali and P. Nikang.

The PRO of Arunachal Pradesh Police (HQ), Itanagar, in a press communiqué said the arrested ULFA-I cadre was “involved in extorting money from high profile politicians from Northeast including the state of Arunachal Pradesh”.

He also informed that a letter addressed to politicians of various parties on the letterhead of ULFA-I with signatures of Drishti Rajkhowa, deputy commander-in-chief ULFA-I was recovered from the cadre.

Two diaries having personal details including address, phone number of prominent political figures, 5 debit/credit cards of various banks, and 3 mobile phones were seized from him.

Earlier, a case (No 8/2019) was registered under sections 384, 385, 506, 511 of the IPC R/W section 10 UAP Act, 1967 in the CB police station of SIT.

“After putting sustained effort and raids in Delhi, Dibrugarh and Guwahati over a period of one month Ranjan Bikash Borghain was finally tracked and arrested,” the Arunachal Pradesh Police PRO stated.

He was produced before the court which remanded him to 7 days’ police custody.

During interrogation it was revealed that he was earlier arrested by Delhi Police on charges of threatening and extortion and sent to Tihar jail.

His link to ULFA dates back to 1985. He has contributed to the organization by recruiting men and held important post. Further investigation is in progress, said police.
