Assam’s Raina Bhattacharya will be speaking on information and democracy at the prestigious World Forum for Democracy 2019, which will be held at Strasbourg in France from November 6 to November 8.

The 28-year-old native of Guwahati, who works as project coordinator for Rashtriya Gramin Vikas Nidhi, focusing on sustainable livelihood, was selected as one of the top 60 Youth Leaders from all over the world for the event.

The World Forum for Democracy is organised by the Council of Europe in conjunction with Republique Francaise (Republic of France) and other partners.

Raina, who has completed her B.Sc (H) Chemistry from the Hindu College, Delhi University and done an MA in Public Policy from O.P. Jindal Global University, Haryana.

She had worked at Facebook India at Hyderabad Office as a data analyst before joining RGVN.

“It is a great opportunity and a privilege to be selected for the prestigious event,” she said while speaking to Northeast Now.

“The event is happening from at the Palais de l’Europe, the Council of Europe’s principal building at Strasbourg, France,” she added.

“There will be sessions, meetings and discussions with various stakeholders from the government, civil society and businesses,” she further said.

The selection process for the event included writing essays and video submissions on topics pertaining to human rights and democracy.

The event will particularly focus on fake news and disinformation, protecting the rights of journalists, voter disenfranchisement, and social media and its role in protecting and preserving democracy.
