Six ULFA (I) rebels have surrendered before police at Margherita in upper Assam’s Tinsukia district.

The six rebels–Pabitro Asom alias Phamen Moran, Aluk Asom alias Mintu Moran, Merchant Asom alias Pranjit Moran, Abon Asom alias Rajib Moran, Sonjuk Asom alias Milan Jyoti Mahanta, Puron Asom alias Kolyan Boruah–surrendered before Tinsukia SP Siladitya Chetia on Friday.

Police said except Pabitro Asom, who had joined ULFA (I) in 2010, all five other rebels joined the proscribed outfit in 2017.

Two other ULFA (I) militants on Thursday had laid down their arms before police in Tinsukia.

Sources said many youths from upper Assam, who had joined the militant outfit only recently, have come back from ULFA (I) camps in Myanmar and surrendered before police.

According to police, the ULFA (I) cadres have deposited six AK series rifles (4 MQ 81 and 2 AK 56), 395 live rounds of ammunition, 13 magazines and two grenades.

The surrendered rebels belong to Moran community and they are from Tinsukia district.

In the recent past, an offensive was launched by Tatmadaw (Myanmar army) against the Northeast rebels forcing them to flee from their camps.

Many of them later came into contact with the security forces and laid down their arms.

More ULFA (I) cadres are likely to surrender in the days to come due to security situation in Myanmar.

Tinsukia SP Chetia said continuous counter insurgency operations are going on to foil ULFA (I)’s bid to carry out subversive activities in the district.

“Our security forces are creating pressure from all sides on the rebel groups to surrender. If any cadre wants to surrender, they can do so,” said Chetia.
