The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has issued a notice asking the citizens of the city, who have pet dogs & cats in their homes, to get their pets registered.

Many of the citizens of Guwahati keep pet dogs and cats as their comfortable companions.

But it has been alleged that most of the owners of the pets in the city don’t get them registered with the authorities concerned and also don’t follow the required norms of vaccinating the animals on time.

A notice, circulated by the veterinary branch (Fancy Bazar) of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) said: “It is hereby informed to the citizens under Guwahati Municipal Corporation area that the Registration of Pet Animal is mandatory as per Guwahati Municipal Corporation Act 1971, (under section 144 & section 301).”

“Therefore all pet owners (Dog & Cat) are requested to register their pets at the Veterinary branch, Guwahati Municipal Corporation, Fancy Bazar at the earliest, otherwise necessary action will (be) taken as per rule,“ it added.

According to the notice, the total fee, including the fee for the application (Rs 10) and registration of the pet (Rs 250) has been fixed at Rs 260.

The GMC notice, issued by the commissioner of the Corporation, has not mentioned about any deadline for the registration of the pet dogs and cats.

On the other hand, according to the rules of the GMC for registration of pet dogs, available on its website, the amount of total fee of registration is Rs 110.

“Pet dog registration is compulsory under GMC Act, denying/failing is violation of law and is punishable,” mentioned in the GMC website.

In the website of the Corporation, it has also been mentioned that “selected NGO will collect Rs. 110 per dog from the owner (Rs. 100 is registration fees and Rs. 10 is application fees).”
