The Supreme Court on Friday ordered transfer of Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC) Coordinator Prateek Hajela to Madhya Pradesh on inter-cadre deputation.

The order further stated he should be posted for a ‘maximum period’.

The ordered was given by a bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi and Justices S A Bobde and R F Nariman.

Hajela was instrumental in updating the NRC in Assam.

IAS officer Hajela is a 1995 batch of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre.

The order further stated that Hajela should join his new assignment within seven days.

Notably, there were strong resentments against Hajela after the final list of NRC was published on August 31 last.

As many as 19,6,657 names were excluded from the final list.

Unfavourable comments started circulating against Hajela in various platforms including the social media after the final publication of the NRC.

The apex court had taken into account the security of Hajela in Assam.

Meanwhile, the Assam Public Works had demanded 100 per cent reverification of the NRC alleging gross anomalies in the update process.
