At least one person went missing when an overloaded motorised country boat capsized on Thursday in the Jiya Bharali river at Jamugurihat in Assam’s Sonitpur district.
Sources said some passengers were rescued by locals while others managed to swim to the shore.
The incident occurred around 11.30 am on Thursday when the boat carrying at least 50 passengers was on its way to Panch Mile ghat in Tezpur across the river from Makua ghat in Jamugurihat.
Police sources said the boat capsized following its engine developed a glitch.
Later SDRF personnel were pressed into service to rescue the passengers.
The missing passenger has been identified as Taijut Ali , 42.
