Acting tough against incident of mob attack, police in Manipur’s Bishnupur district arrested 14 people including 10 women on charges of forecful marriage and assault.

Police said the incident took place at Upokpi Khunao village in Bishnupur district where a mob forced a woman to marry her neighbour, accusing both of them of having an extra-marital affair.

The mob also assaulted the minor daughter of the woman who tried to prevent the mob and save her mother, police said.

“We found that a mob including mostly women assaulting a man, who is in his 30s. They forced a woman to marry the man for allegedly having an illicit relationship,” said Priyadarshini Laishram, superintendent of police, Bishnupur.

“The mob had garlanded both of them with plastic bottles and paraded them in public,” Laishram added.

The trio was rescued by the police.

The mob had also performed Keina Katpa, forceful marriages performed between man and woman if found involved in illicit relationship, the SP said.

“No one is allowed to take law and order in their own hands. We have arrested the 14 based on video footage of the incident. All the 14 were produced in the court and remanded to seven-day police custody,” the SP added.

It may be mentioned that the Manipur Legislative Assembly last year passed Anti-Mob Lynching Law, which is, however, yet to be notified.
