The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the date for linking PAN and Aadhaar from September 30 to December 31 next.

The CBDT had made it mandatory to link Aadhaar number with that of the PAN ID in order to file income tax returns.

However, this is the seventh time that the Central Government has extended the deadline for individuals to link their PAN and Aadhaar.

The Central Government had earlier extended the linking of PAN and Aadhaar on March 31 last to September 30.

However, due to demands from various segments of the society for extension of the date, the CBDT had in a notification on Friday sated that the last date for PAN and Aadhaar linking has been extended to December 31.

The Supreme Court had earlier declared that Aadhaar scheme as constitutionally valid and held that it would remain mandatory for filing of income tax returns and allotment of PAN.

It may be mentioned that if anyone does not link their PAN with Aadhaar within December 31 next, their PANs will be invalidated from January 1, 2020.
