The Army based at Namsai in Arunachal Pradesh detained Gajan Khek, a surrendered ULFA member on Sunday in connection with the attack on an Army convoy by suspected United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) and NSCN-K on January 24 in Namsai district.

The Army convoy returning from anti-insurgency operation was ambushed by the militants at around 7.15 am at an area in between Nongtau and Piyong.

The troops of 11 Grenadiers were returning from a pre-dawn operation when they were attacked.

Later, a jawan – NK Rakesh Kumar – martyred during the combing operation.

Sources said the Army has been interrogating Gajan at the Namsai Army camp.

The militants attacked the Army convoy with grenades apart from triggering a remote- controlled IED which was planted near a culvert on the gravelled road. The army gypsy vehicle suffered minor damage in the attack.

According to sources, China has been backing the Northeast rebel group to wage a war against Indian forces.

“Chinese government knows very well that direct war is not possible. Therefore, they are backing the Northeast rebels to continue the ‘proxy war’ against Indian establishment,” claimed a source.

On Republic Day, suspected ULFA-I militants carried out two low intensity blasts at Jagun Bazar and Tirap Colliery in Tinsukia district to make their presence felt in the area.

The crude bombs were planted in the areas through timer device.

“ULFA-I has been outsourcing others to carry the blast. It’s a new trend which has been following by the rebel group,” said a police source.

On Friday, a joint team of Assam Rifles and police apprehended over-ground ULFA-I workers who have been identified as Ranjit Chutia, Bongday Sabuk Dora and Debemshor Gogoi of Kokorani village of Tinsukia district in connection with low intensity blasts on  Republic Day.
