Sensation prevailed in eastern Assam’s Sivasagar district after the recovery of a carcass of a baby elephant on Thursday.

The body of the baby elephant was recovered from a sandbar near Desangmukh.

Locals witnessed the body of the dead elephant on Wednesday night at around 10 pm.

The baby elephant is believed to have strayed away from the herd that came out from Pani Dihing Bird Sanctuary in search of food.

Later, when the Forest department was informed, forest workers recovered the carcass on Thursday.

The baby elephant bore injury marks in the body.

Forest officials and locals suspect, the baby elephant was killed by poachers that might have come to the sanctuary to catch birds.

Notably, a herd of wild elephants from the bird sanctuary has been regularly intruding into human habitation in search of food.

Though the Forest department is apprised of the situation, it has failed to push back the herd of elephants.

This has resulted in the death of two persons this year.

Though there is an office of the Forest Department at Desangmukh, allegations are rife that due to lackadaisical attitude, the region has been experiencing man-elephant conflict for quite some.

This has led to loss of lives of both human beings as well as elephants.
